The first thing you need for your new rabbit is adequate housing. Depending on whether it’s with a rabbit hutch outside or inside these care tips will help you with your purchasing decision.
There are a lot of cages sold for rabbits that are not ideal for your new bunny. Some are just too small, and many have wire floors, which may make cleaning easier but is very uncomfortable to the bunny. As usual, bigger is better. If your bunny will spend most of its time in a cage, then get the biggest cage that is practical in your home or outside area. As a general rule the hutch should be selected on the following.
Sizes: Small – Medium: single rabbit 2' x 4'
Large – Giant: single rabbit 4' x 6’
Adequate Housing:
Solid Flooring: Wire or wire-like flooring is not comfortable for your rabbit or good for their feet. This type of flooring can cause sore hocks which in turn can result in serious infections.
Floor Covering: Rabbits do not feel safe on slippery surfaces and could end up with serious injuries. All floor coverings should be washable and prevent slipping. Although a wire floor is perfectly safe in a portable rabbit hutch outside. These are made to be set on the grass for the rabbits outside play time.
Ramps: Multi-level condos often contain ramps to enable a rabbit to access other levels. Be sure that these ramps are covered with a nonskid, rabbit safe material or are equipped with wood slats to help provide traction.
Food & Water: Water and food bowls should be made of heavy, crockery or your rabbit will mistake them for toys and toss them around their house.
Litter Box: It is important that your rabbit's litter box is an adequate size to prevent accidents. Fill with 1/2" of non-clumping rabbit safe litter. Some recommendations would be all natural wood stove pellets.
Nesting Box: All rabbits need a place to hide from all the hustle and bustle. This is a definite must for any cage.
Toys: Your rabbit will also need toys to play with. Empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls work great, hard plastic baby toys and old telephone books are just a few items you can add to your rabbit's housing.
Note: Your rabbit's hutch should be completely cleaned at least once a week. The best cleaning method is to use a soap and water mix or white vinegar and water. Please do not use pine scented, pine oil based or commercial cleaners which can be very harmful to your rabbit.
Inadequate housing can cause a number of behavioral issues and will cause your rabbit's muscles to deteriorate. Appropriate housing does not eliminate the need for rabbits to have exercise time outside or their housing. Rabbits should be allowed at least several hours outside of their housing to run, jump, explore and interact with their family daily. Multi-level bunny condos are also one way to give your rabbit the space they need while minimizing the amount of floor space dedicated to his/her housing.
