There are many reasons a dog might bark. Here are some of my tips and methods to stop barking dogs.

Dogs tend to bark for many different reasons; for starters it can depend on your dogs breed. If you are dealing with a Doberman, German Shepard, or any other guard dog breed then they tend to utilize barking as a tool and will certainly be more vocal towards strangers or any new noises. This also occurs in many sporting breeds such as beagles. They were bred specifically for announcing to their masters when they have picked up the scent of prey. Other dogs, such as the toy breed, seem to just bark at the sound of their own voice. Depending on what breed or breed makeup your dog is can help you in starting to understand the reason behind their barking.

Let’s move breeds aside for a moment. Dogs will also bark because they sense something is wrong, a potty requirement, boredom, loneliness or just because they want to play. In these circumstances it is not right to try and prevent barking and you should first make sure to try these methods to stop barking dogs.

Barking is often a way of communication for your dog. Most people look down on dogs that excessively bark but we need to realize that they are only trying to communicate with us in the best way they know how. Because Dogs can’t talk to their owners it is up to us to be able to interpret what they need by their mood or body language.

Dog’s are social animals and need a lot of interaction. If you are secluding them for long periods of time then be prepared for an on edge, frustrated and anxious barking ball of fur.

Barking can also occur due to suffering from nervous, pent up energy. As dog owners we need to ask ourselves if our dog is getting all the exercise they need. About two hours of exercise per day is all that most breeds need but like humans some individuals will just require more to burn off excess energy. Try this method first if your dog is an inside pet. Most dogs that are kept outside at liberty will defiantly not have this issue. If your dog is kept mostly indoors or confined outside then it might be a good investment to install an underground fence if you have the room. These are very safe fencing alternatives for you dog that will keep your dog safely inside your yard and allow him to be at liberty any time he needs to get a little exercise. This one small method to stop barking dogs and could completely eliminate the barking with just one simple change.

At times their dogs can use their barking to manipulate you. This is where respect needs to be present within your relationship. You as pack leader need to make this clear to them at all times or you can find yourself low in the pack. You are suppose to be the alpha dog of the pack and if you maintain this position you will find that your dog will be a lot more manageable, trainable and happier because of it.

By giving in to your dog’s demands they are only training YOU to give them your full attention any time they bark. Do not be afraid to ignore your dog when they are making their demands. Try an use your body language to let them know you are the one in charge and will comply when you are ready

Here is a great tip on stopping this behavior. Turn your back on your dog and do not pay any attention to them. This includes looking at them or even speaking to them, just completely ignore them. In time they will soon realize that if this is going to happen then they will not do it. You MUST stay consistent during this time and during any other training you might embark on in the future.

If you try this method and the barking persists try this. Hold your dog’s collar and his muzzle gently at the same time. This will show authority by preventing your dog from barking and in turn will help you on your start to taking the alpha position. Your dog of course will not care for this but it will not hurt him in any way as long as you are gentle. In the end the reward will be worth all your efforts.

There are many times when it takes more than just a few methods to stop barking dogs. In these situations I would seek alternative methods. There are citronella spray collars and anti bark shock collars available if all else fails. These collars have great success rates and are highly recommended but at least try the tips listed first. Another good idea, that I would recommend first, would be to read a good dog training book if you are not able to seek professional help.
