i have an anti-social dog. please advise me?

snowblossom ☺♪♫ asked:

my 7 month old shih-tzu cannot seem to get along with any dog.. i took her to a doggie day care before and she was shaking from fear and was very defensive to everyone.. she is so nice when it comes to other people, but to other dogs, she’s more afraid from the looks of it than aggressive.. we had a pom and another shih tzu in the house this weekend and she won’t even get near them. she won’t bark but would hide all the time! what should i do? should I force her to get along? i worry other dogs might hurt her coz all she does is run away from them.. please help me.. thanks so much from me and my Minnie!☺

Separation anxiety related barking?

Laurrrrrr asked:

I recently adopted a female lab/pit mix from someone who could no longer keep her. She’s about a year old. I’ve been working really hard with her the past couple of days and taking her on two hour long walks a day to wear her out before I have to leave for work. She is crate trained, so yesterday afternoon I put her to bed and went to work for a 4 hour shift. I got home to a note from my downstairs neighbor saying she had barked for hours and he would report us to our landlord if it continued. We have a past noise violation and this is our last chance.

I’ve been leaving for short periods of time, slowly increasing the amount of time I’m gone, making sure I don’t make a scene when I leave/arrive home so as not to get her excited or stressed. I know if I stick with this, I will (hopefully!) see long-term results, but until then, I am in dire need of a way to prevent her from barking. I don’t want to be evicted and I don’t want to give up on this pup like the last people did!

I should also mention I bought a collar that starts as a “tingle” and progresses after each bark, but upon reading training websites and many yahoo answers, I decided that I would only use the collar as a last resort. I don’t want to do more harm than good to her. But since i spent $50 on the collar and opened it, my anti-bark funds are kind of limited. i.e. I can’t go buying any more special collars.

I hope someone can help! I have 3 days off until my next shift and then i’ll have to leave her alone again. Thank you for your time!

do you guys think i should switch flea med?

luv ellell asked:

i am using frontline now but i kinda want to switch to K9 advantix. what do you guys think? give me some of ur insights. thank you!
shouldn’t K9 advantix also prevent heartworm? i mean since it repells misquitos(spell)
i thought about revolution too, but i don’t like the fast that it works on both cats and dogs. to me it kinda makes me think that it’s not specific and not just designed for dogs. i don’t have anything against cats i just like to be specific about things that i used on my dog.

Anti-Social Shih Tzu Puppies?

lily2005_7 asked:

I took my two male Shih Tzu puppies to a dog park to play with other dogs for the first time. The younger Shih Tzu puppy is 6 months old and the older Shih Tzu puppy is 11 months old. Both Shih Tzu puppies had interactions with neighborhood dogs, 2 aggressive Maltese dogs. But they have not had any interactions with other dogs aside from each other and the 2 aggressive female Maltese dogs. Now they also bark at the 2 agressive female Maltese dogs but when my puppies were younger they were afraid of these 2 agressive female Maltese dogs. Both dogs hardly bark at home. But they both growled and barked so loud at the other dogs at this dog park. They also growled and barked at one of the dogs at the vet’s office, too. How can I get our Shih Tzu puppies to socialize/play with other dogs nicely at the dog park before taking them to dog training school?

Loving dog, Anti-social with other dogs?

smileatanything asked:

I have a year and a half year old Shih-Poo. Hes my family’s first dog so we weren’t exactly sure how to do much when we got him. Obviously we learned through experience but I think we may have missed something with socializing him. Hes a very very loving and smart dog but here are the things we are concerned with:

-Growls or barks whenever people hug or greet each other. Its like hes not a fan of physical contact lol. My dad seems to think hes being protective but we arent sure..
-Barks and growls at any type of animal. Especially dogs. People avoid walking their dogs past our house because they know they will see and hear him from the window barking like crazy. When hes near animals he does the same thing, will bark and such and then when they get close he runs away.

Is there any way to help him with either one of these problems? Or is this something that needed to be done as a puppy?

How to stop crate barking?

Hound Lover asked:

We have an 18 week old hound mix who we are crate training. The night time crate we have is a plastic covered crate and he does OK (with fingers in the crate and multiple potty breaks during the night). The day time crate we are using is a large wire mesh crate, with a cover.

He won’t stop barking while he’s in the day crate…he’s never been in it for longer than an hour and he just won’t stop. We’ve tried covering it, we feed him in it, toss in treats and longer chewing treats and nothing has worked. The major issue isn’t our sanity, it’s the stress on our 9 year old hound.

I would prefer to not use a bark collar, given that he IS in a crate and he’s still a little guy but we are at our wits end. In a previous thread, the Yapper Zapper was suggested (stream of water sprayed as a deterrent) and I can’t find it anywhere online.

Two questions…1) Does anyone have a link for the yapper zapper? 2) Can anyone specifically suggest an anti-barking tool or product we can try?
Wow! Fast responses, thanks so much!! I should have been more descriptive in our behavior.

We are NOT giving treats or praise to stop barking, nor are we reinforcing the barking with letting him out (much).

My husband works from home, so letting him bark for hours on end isn’t an option.

Oh, and we’ve tried using the night time crate, but that only works when one of us is there, fingers in the crate.

i have a 9 month old puppy who is VERY anti-social?

bay asked:

i have a 9 month chihuahua puppy and got her at 2 months. whenever she sees or hears someone, she starts barking and will not stop. i try to distract her but nothing seems to work. i also raise my voice sternly at her when does this, and she becomes cowed, but still barks and growls. she will stop barking a little less if i bring her over to them and hold her up so they can pet her, but she shakes and tries to hide in my arms. i take her out to places where i know there will be a lot of people, but all she does is shake, bark, and growl at the people and other dogs! when there is anyone else in my house, she will follow us around and bark at the guest. if we sit down, she sits on my lap, but continues to bark. she really is a very loving puppy, and is very good in all other categories! but the only people she likes are me, my parents, and my brother. how do i get my little one to be more social, and keep the barking to a minimal? is it too late to change these behaviors?
