First, don’t bother with cheap store brands such as Hartz, they don’t work at all, and may even be dangerous, google hartz and sick/dying dogs and cats.

As for the others:

Frontline – works good on adult fleas and ticks
Frontline plus – works good on adult, egg and larvae
Both can become ineffective as the fleas and ticks grow immune

Advantage – works okay on adults
Advantix – works on fleas, ticks, mites, flies, adult, eggs and larvae
Both made by Bayer, and like frontline, become ineffective over time

Revolution – No personal experience, has been reported to work well on all above infestations, but also works to prevent heartworms and is, therefore, prescription only

Promeris – Do not use. Has been shown to effectively kill fleas and ticks, but also dogs and cats as well

Comfortis – New on the market, prescription only. I have not heard good or bad regarding effectiveness or safety. Only time will tell.

Natural Defense – all natural, plant oil based spot treatment, has been reported to work well by some customers, not at all by others. Biggest complaint is that after application, there is an oil slick on the dog or cat for a day or two until it soaks in, and then for approx. 1 week thereafter, the dog or cat smells like the drops. It is a pleasant smell to me, however some would disagree.

My recommendation has been, based on customer reports, to use a box of frontline plus, then switch to advantix. Continue to switch back and forth and be sure to use year round. It may become cold enough outside to kill fleas and ticks, but in your house it is always breeding season.
