Loving dog, Anti-social with other dogs?

smileatanything asked:

I have a year and a half year old Shih-Poo. Hes my family's first dog so we weren't exactly sure how to do much when we got him. Obviously we learned through experience but I think we may have missed something with socializing him. Hes a very very loving and smart dog but here are the things we are concerned with:

-Growls or barks whenever people hug or greet each other. Its like hes not a fan of physical contact lol. My dad seems to think hes being protective but we arent sure..
-Barks and growls at any type of animal. Especially dogs. People avoid walking their dogs past our house because they know they will see and hear him from the window barking like crazy. When hes near animals he does the same thing, will bark and such and then when they get close he runs away.

Is there any way to help him with either one of these problems? Or is this something that needed to be done as a puppy?

this problem is from lack of socialization as a puppy. He is protecting you and your house, hes just doing his job. Maybe check out your nearest petsmart for a traing class. It includes other people and dogs and is an awesome form of socialization

Most aggression comes from being frightened. Especially in smaller breeds. One thing I have seen used to help is positive reinforcment to teach the dog that good things happen when people interact or other animals are around. So if another dog comes by, redirect the dog to calm down and then give it a treat when it is relaxed. Then they start to associate other dogs or visitors with treats.

Get Cesar’s Way by Cesar Milan. Start watching Dog Whisperer. Take your dog to obedience class.

Your dog is the pack leader in your house and he’s acting like it.

Exercise, discipline, affection. In that order.
