What flea medicine is the best for dogs?

Tuesday Jul 7, 2009

Frontline?
K9 Advantix?

a different one? Do you use it every month? Thats what the package says to do, but Ive heard of people that just use it every other month for inside dogs. (My puppy is an inside dog). He is 10 pounds and 9 months old (full grown).

I use Revolution on my dogs. Its applied once a month and it protects against fleas, ticks, heartworms, some intestinal parasites, and sarcoptic mange.

K9 and Frontline are both great. K9 repels mosquitoes but Frontline does not. I do not recommend Hartz or any products that has Permethrin, Propoxur, Amitrax, Tetrachlorvinphos, or Fenoxycarb since these chemicals have been linked to nervous system disorders and other health problems in people. You can go online to the NRDC’s website as they have a neat pocket guide to flea treatments.
My dog is an inside pet, but I recommend using the flea treatments every month as fleas are jumpers and can be carried into homes from visiting pets, visitors and from your lawn.

My vets have always recommended Frontline for my outside dogs. They even told me I could give it to my dog every 3 weeks during the summer, since they are outside so much. Even though your dog is an inside dog, I would still give the dog Frontline every 4 weeks. I don’t think the medicine will last a full 8 weeks.
