Do you think that people who take noisy, barking dogs out in public are anti-social?
Karen M asked:
I personally **** it when someone walks past me in the street with a dog that starts barking at me and scares the crap out of me!!! I find it extremely rude when their owners don't even apologize. Just the other day, an Alsatian was barking it's head off right in front of a shop as I was about to go in. I got a massive fright and jumped as I went in, causing the owner to remark "Never heard a dog bark before,eh?". Do you agree with me or should I be more accepting of our canine "friends"?

I think they are schmucks who are to inept to train or controll their dogs!

No, the people that have those dogs aren’t necessarily “anti social” – they are just ignorant, inconsiderate, A$$es. Next time, fake a heart attack. [g]

Some dogs aren’t as social as others, mostly because the owners have failed to socialise them properly. It’s not the dogs fault, a dog does what the owner allows them to do. Of course the owner should apologise, especially if the dog has scared them.
Although, my dog barks out of excitment. If someone walks past she may bark at them but she isn’t being aggressive she is excited to see them. Do i correct my dog for being excited to see someone?

It’s not the dogs fault, a dog is what you make of it and obviously has had some bad training. You can train any dog to not bark if you put the effort in but not everyone does.
I’ve not had my German Shepherd very long and sometimes he barks but I never ignore it I try my best to stop him! And eventually he’ll learn to stop. But it’s not right of people to not even try when their dog is scaring people.

Well I think the opposite really, They have a loud noisy dog and instead of keeping it locked up they still go out so the dog can get some fresh air. Maybe it’s you that should learn to relax a little around dogs that bark.

I believe that it is rude when an owner goes public with a dog that doesn’t have any self control. The owner is not anti-social because he’s just taking his dog on a walk, he can’t control it. (Obviously). It is the dog owner’s fault when it comes to self control because he should have trained him better. Depending on the situation, you have a right to be somewhat annoyed. In the situation above, it sounds like that dog owner needs to take his pup to a few obedience classes.

i think that people who take poorly socialized, poorly trained dogs out are morons….
but, the only way that the dog will improve is through practice.
usually i mention how i’m sure in time the dog will become more well socialized, and i hope they are working on the “little behavior problem”… people usually **** that… but no dog scares me- if it did, i’d lose my little corner of the rescue world…

I have one of those noisy barking dogs. It happens. You seem like you are afraid of dogs, and that isn’t the owners issue.
My dog is a reactive rescue that is known to bark at strangers. I don’t take him to parks or stores, but I certainly won’t deny him walks because he may encounter people. He is always under my control. If someone seems put off by it I apologize, but people usually understand.

It depends.
It’s horrible if they’re like that guy- you always should be considerate of other people and respect them (provided they haven’t given you a reason not to). That’s inexcusable, they should be sent to a training class because in that case it’s clearly not the dog’s problem.
On the other hand, there are people who take their dogs out in public because the dogs need socialisation, and while they’re doing this the dogs will probably bark at people. In that case, provided the person apologises, minds the dog, and keeps the dog away from people who look afraid (or puts themselves between the person and the dog if there’s not enough room to get away) and does their best to quiet and control the dog, then I think it’s fine.
They’re not being anti-social, they’re doing a good thing. They’re doing their best, and the dog isn’t going to get any better if they just leave it in the yard. The key is they have to try to do something about it, and they have to respect others.

I agree, but there are always exceptions. Yes, the owner should train its dog not to bark at everything that moves and have a command to get the dog to be quiet.
But, there are always exceptions…they could have just gotten the dog and still working with him/her. Or some people never bring the dog out and dont really have a clue how their dog will respond to the “outside” world.
Either way…It irritates me also. My neighbor has a noisy dog. I come over their house every single day (almost). She has to have a 10 min barking fit every single day for the last 3 years. That bugs the crap out of me.

While the man who made that comment to you definitely had some socialization issues himself, please don’t be so general about it.
There are many rescue dogs in the world who are being rehabilitated as we speak. Part of that rehabilitation is socialization, which you can’t teach in the house. In addition to that, there are many pups out there who are learning their manners, and just like children, it takes patience to teach them to do something correctly.
Socialization can’t be learned at home. You can’t teach a dog how to react to new things if it isn’t introduced to them, so you have to take the dog out in the world. If the dog is walking in an area where dogs are allowed, you are just going to have to deal. And ignore the rude owners.
anti bark
Nope, just ill-mannered,stupid,weak & spoiled as rotten as their animals.
