Dog breathing heavy during the day and panting at night?

Wednesday Sep 9, 2009

sharoneb1 asked:

The last three days my dog has seemed to be breathing a bit heavier than usual and he is panting at night. Other than his breathing, I have not noticed any change in his routine, ie his eating habits, amount that he drinks, energy level, etc. I have not switched his food or anything but I did apply K9 Advantix to him this week. could this be the problem?
It is not because he is hot. My house is air conditioned and the environment is the same as it has been. He drinks plenty of water and it is not due to dreams because he is not asleep, he is just laying there panting. I was curious about the Advantix because that is the only thing out of the ordinary that I have done this week.

If he hasn’t been seen by a vet recently then I would do that first. Breathing problems can be a sign of many different conditions, and it wouldn’t be a good idea to speculate. Best to have him checked out and know for sure.

Good question. I would take him to the vet just to make sure nothing is going on with his respritory system. Also, ask them about the advantix. It might just be a fluke that you put the advantix on at the time but I would check with your vet about other possibilities.

If your dog is hot, he may be breathing a tiny bit heavier and panting, but have you offered him water? Sometimes I have to remind my dog when she is panting that she should get a drink (she’s 2) I would say try to keep him cool, like not in direct sun, watch his diet, bowel movements and energy and see what happens. If it continues I might call a vet and get an idea of what is going on

He’s probably just hot. It depends on what kind of dog it is, because bulldogs and similar types are constantly breathing rough. The Advantix wouldn’t have done anything to your dog. If you’re still worried and it doesn’t stop, take him to the veterinarian.

Maybe, He could be having an allergic reaction. But to be sure as dogs can not tell what they feel take him to the vet you could be preventing something bigger. Good luck.

I use the same flea and tick medication and my dogs have no reaction at all. This does not mean that your dog will not. Put a call into your vet to check with them if this is a side effect of the medication.

My dog pants and breathes heavier when it is hot in the house. Sometimes we let it get up to 75 or so inside, and he definitely prefers colder temperatures. I can tell he’s too hot when he lays on the hardwoods instead of the carpet, or when he lays right up against the door and breathes harder.

no i dont think. i think the problem is that when he is sleeping he has had a bad dream or something to make him do that at night. the problem is that since he has had that dream or something it has effected his whole routine

I wouldn’t rule out a side effect but it could just be coincidence.
If your dog is a bit on the fatter side, his panting could be weight related especially if its hot or humid where you are.
Some other things can affect breathing are ticks, poisoning (from onions or chocolate for example), heart problems, bloating and age.
Best to have a checkup at the vet to be sure, and look up the ideal weight for his breed and size.

The above will link you to a forum with concern’s of other people that used this. According to what is said, i would say it is a side effect. I wouldn’t use it again.

Our Golden was doing that exact same thing. Is there any other odd thing? Take him to the vet ASAP….Could be many things. Maybe lung cancer or tumor…I know you love him so please take him and have some test ran…
