It’s called separation anxiety. The dog in time will get over it. But you should for now ignore it until the dog does. Like a child the more you make a big deal of it, the worst the behavior will get. Because the dog will take your attention to it as reinforcement to the behavior. Try a ticking time clock to calm it down. Place it on top of the crate though, and not inside.

IS the dog new to crate training? They will whine for the first few nights they are crated. You shouldn’t use a water bottle on a crated dog. This makes them feel the crate is an area of punishment, instead of a den. Be persistent, don’t give in to the whining, but you will have to listen to it until the dog makes the adjustment. It will be worth it in the end.

If the dog has been crate trained for awhile, and this was not a problem before then something must be wrong. Either the pet is not feeling well, or something is disturbing it’s sleep.

A dog is a pack animal…if you raise it to be a part of you, you will have a dog that will be loyal and will want to please you. I suggest you take the whining pup or dog and let it sleep with you or on your dirty clothes….or a blanket next to your bed….if you can’t do this perhaps you need to give it away. Whining means unhappiness. I don’t mean to sound harsh but love your dog or give it away.

If you are trying to crate train your dog NEVER ever use it as a punishment. I would not recommend using a spray bottle or an anti-bark collar in association with the crate. Start by leaving the crate door open with a few toys or treats inside. The dog will soon investigate, find the treats and consider the crate as a good place. Once the dog is used to playing in the crate, close the crate door for a few minutes while the dog plays and relaxes. If the dog whines while in the crate, do not scold, admonish or talk to it (If you do this, the dog will learn that noise gets results). Once the dog is quite for a few minutes, take him out and play with him. The only exception to this is if the whine is to tell you that he needs to go to the toilet. You should gradually be able to crate the dog for a longer amount of time. Remember, a crate is not a punishment and can give dogs a sense of security. Dont let anyone tell you to get rid of your dog just because you crate them. A dog does not need to sleep on your bed or your dirty clothes in order to be happy!
